The Museum of the First President of Russia Boris Yeltsin

The Boris Yeltsin Presidential Center is a museum and event space that brings to life the first democratically elected president of Russia’s history.  Described by the New Yorker as “a remarkable new museum,” the venue aims to tell the truth about Yeltsin’s impact on the 1990s, a time of transition from totalitarianism to democracy.

“Striking visual and audio artifacts.”

– WASHINGTON POST

When tapped to create the media and interactives for the Center, Lorem Ipsum knew that this was the first space of its kind to celebrate post-Soviet Russian culture and history, and the content needed to reflect much more than just a presidency, but a major shift in Russian life. In a three-year-long effort, Lorem Ipsum traveled the globe to interview world leaders and gathered footage from over 100 archival sources to create all the media in both English and Russian.

THE NUMBERS

133 interviews recorded in 9 countries
100+ archival sources worth of licensed footage
163 multilingual interactive audiovisual programs produced

We recorded over 50 prominent political and cultural figures and world leaders, including former President Bill Clinton and former Prime Minister Tony Blair, who shared their thoughts on Yeltsin’s legacy.

Lorem Ipsum developed the content and designed the interactives throughout the museum, ranging from documentary films to experiential and interactive installations that are deeply meaningful and inspire self-reflection.

CREATING COUPS

We created two installations portraying the 1991 and 1993 October Coup – critical turning points in Russia’s post-Soviet development. We designed multi-faceted environments to display the narratives, reflecting the complex constitutional crises that faced the country.

A choreographed multiscreen program tells the dramatic story of the August Coup in 1991.
Historic archival media is projected onto the shields, allowing the visitor to experience the chaotic moments of the 1993 Coup from a unique perspective.

Since its opening, the museum has quickly become one of the most popular sites in the city. It has won multiple accolades, including the European Museum of the Year Award. Today, the Yeltsin Presidential Center continues to be one of the country’s only venues portraying the chaotic transitions and constitutional crises of the day honestly and engagingly.
